Listening Posts as an International Student
A listening post is the news you receive, intentionally or unintentionally, by hearing it either through radio, TV, around your friends, or other people talking about things.
I normally don't listen much to the news on the radio so the main portion of listening news I am receiving is from my friends and family. Since I am a part of SAU's tennis team which has mainly international students in it, I receive a lot of news from hearing them talking about what's going on in their home countries. Having multiple international friends is beneficial since I get a worldwide perspective of what is going on in the world right now. One example is the war in Ukraine. One of my friends is from Ukraine and once the war started we spoke a lot about the situation, and I received a lot of news related to the war, by only speaking with her.
I am also receiving a lot of news from back home in Sweden by speaking to my mother. She usually fills me in about the most recent news stories from home, both locally from my city but also nationally as well.
Listening posts like this is important for us to be aware of what is going on around the world. If you are not intentionally watching the latest news this is a great way of receiving news. Without speaking to some of my friends about the news from their home countries I would have missed out on a lot of different news stories.
